Anne Atkins has a long and varied experience in the arts and entertainment. She began acting at a very early age, in school productions at Cambridge, where her father was Head Master of King’s College. Later she attended the Decroux School of Mime in Paris and studied the harp with Solange Renis. Returning to England she directed the Clare College summer play, worked for a time at the British Council, and then moved to Oxford to read English at Brasenose College. She maintained her enthusiasm for the theatre and while at Oxford acted in productions with Richard Curtis, Rowan Atkinson, Philip Franks and Tim McInnerny. During one long vacation she appeared at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival; another holiday was spent in a missionary hospital in Nepal.
After Finals, Anne married Shaun Atkins. She went on to attend the Webber-Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art, after which they moved back to Cambridge where Shaun completed his theology degree. Eventually they settled in Fulham, where they live today with their family.
Today Anne works as a writer and journalist. She is widely recognised as one of Britain’s most trenchant commentators on moral and ethical issues, a familiar name on television debates, media discussions and local panels all round the country.
Anne has been a presenter of Channel 5’s The Agony Hour and ITV’s Sunday Morning. She has been a columnist for several publications including Christian Family (now Parentwise), Third Way, and, as Agony Atkins, The Daily Telegraph. Known nationally as a defender of biblically-based morals, she is a regular contributor to The Daily Mail and The Daily Telegraph, and has written for The Sun, The Guardian, The Evening Standard, The Express and Woman. Her television appearances have included Heart of the Matter, Kilroy, The Heaven and Earth Show and Newsnight. Radio contributions include Thought for the Day, The Moral Maze, Sunday Playhouse, various shows on Talk Radio and Education Matters. She has acted in theatres including The Globe, The Royal National Theatre, The Oxford Playhouse, and Riding Lights Theatre Company. To complete a formidable list of multi-disciplinary achievement in the arts, Anne is the author of three novels and a non-fiction book, Split Image.
Expect an evening with Anne Atkins to be provocative, challenging and above all clear-sightedly biblical, as she shares her insights and her dramatic skills.
